Aluminum: the default for good reason

Lightweight, resistant to rust, and moderately priced, aluminum handles most US climates well and is the material installed on the large majority of new homes. It dents more easily than steel (a stray branch or an aggressively placed ladder can leave a visible mark), but it won’t corrode through the way an unprotected steel gutter eventually can.

Vinyl: cheapest, with a real cold-weather tradeoff

Vinyl costs less than any other option and never needs painting, which makes it an easy sell on price alone. The tradeoff shows up in cold climates specifically: vinyl becomes noticeably brittle below freezing and can crack under the stress of snow or ice load in a way aluminum simply doesn’t. In a mild climate with a tight budget, it’s a reasonable choice. In a climate with real winters, the upfront savings can turn into an early replacement.

Steel: strength for snow-heavy climates

Steel handles heavy, sustained snow load better than aluminum, which is why it shows up more often in northern and mountain climates where winter weight is a genuine engineering concern rather than a minor inconvenience. The catch is the protective coating: scratch or chip it, and the exposed steel underneath will rust, sometimes faster than homeowners expect given how solid the material feels.

Copper: expensive, essentially permanent

Copper costs several times what aluminum does, but it doesn’t rust, rarely needs any maintenance beyond the occasional cleaning, and develops a green verdigris patina over years that a lot of homeowners choose the material specifically for. It’s not a practical default recommendation for most budgets, but on an older or architecturally distinctive home, it’s often chosen as much for how it ages as for its durability.

Matching material to climate, not just budget

Cold, snow-heavy climates favor steel’s strength over aluminum’s lighter weight. Mild, wet climates do fine with aluminum’s corrosion resistance without needing steel’s extra strength. Tight budgets in genuinely mild climates can reasonably consider vinyl, as long as “mild” really means minimal freeze risk, not just average temperatures.
