Aluminum is the right answer for most homes: it resists corrosion, weighs little enough to hang easily, and costs a fraction of copper. The materials worth considering instead solve specific problems, namely heavy snow load, a very tight budget in a warm climate, or a historic house where appearance matters as much as function.

Aluminum: the default for good reason

Aluminum is lightweight, won’t rust, and takes paint finishes well, which is why it’s on the large majority of new US homes. It’s also the only material commonly available as seamless, formed on-site from a coil, which removes most of the joints where leaks eventually start.

Its weakness is denting. A stray branch or an aggressively placed ladder leaves a visible mark that steel would shrug off. That’s cosmetic rather than functional, but it’s the complaint aluminum owners actually have.

Gauge matters more than the material label

This is the detail most quotes leave out and most homeowners never think to ask about. Residential aluminum comes in two common thicknesses: .027 inch and .032 inch. The thicker one resists denting substantially better, holds its shape under ice load, and costs only slightly more across a whole house.

A quote that says “seamless aluminum” without naming a gauge could be either. Ask. If two quotes differ and one is cheaper, gauge is one of the first places to look for why.

Note

Copper is specified by weight rather than thickness, usually 16 oz or 20 oz. Twenty is the heavier, longer-lived option and the one normally used on visible architectural work.

Vinyl: cheapest, with a real cold-weather trade-off

Vinyl costs less than anything else, never needs painting, and snaps together well enough that a competent homeowner can install it without specialist tools. On a mild-climate house with a tight budget, that’s a defensible choice.

The trade-off is specific and predictable: vinyl becomes brittle below freezing and cracks under snow or ice load in a way aluminum doesn’t. UV exposure also makes it chalky and faded over time, and unlike aluminum it can’t be repainted successfully. In a climate with real winters, the upfront saving frequently turns into an early replacement.

Steel: strength for snow-heavy climates

Steel carries sustained snow and ice weight better than aluminum, which is why it appears more often in northern and mountain regions where winter load is an engineering concern rather than an inconvenience.

The catch is the coating. Galvanized steel is zinc-coated, and once that coating is scratched or cut, the steel underneath rusts, often faster than the material’s solidity suggests. Galvalume, an aluminum-zinc coating, resists that better and is worth asking about if steel is on the table. Steel is also heavy enough that hanger spacing matters more than with aluminum.

Copper and zinc: the fifty-year options

Copper doesn’t rust, needs essentially no maintenance, and weathers from bright metal to brown to green verdigris over years. Many people choose it specifically for that. It’s several times the cost of aluminum, requires soldered joints and a crew who can do them, and on a visible elevation it is as much an architectural decision as a drainage one.

Zinc is the less familiar sibling: comparable lifespan, self-healing patina that closes minor scratches, and a slightly lower price than copper. It’s more common in Europe than the US, which mostly affects how easily you’ll find an installer who’s worked with it.

Matching material to climate, not just budget

Hard-freeze and heavy-snow regions: favor steel’s strength or thicker-gauge aluminum, and rule vinyl out. Ice load is the failure mode, and it acts on hangers as much as on the gutter.

Mild, wet regions: aluminum’s corrosion resistance is the property that matters, and steel’s extra strength buys little.

Coastal and salt-air regions: aluminum and copper handle salt far better than steel, which corrodes quickly in that environment regardless of coating.

Hot, high-UV regions: vinyl degrades fastest here even without freeze risk, and dark-colored finishes on any material fade sooner.

What the material means for the rest of the system

Material choice quietly constrains three other decisions. Heavier materials need closer hanger spacing, which adds labor. Copper and zinc need compatible fasteners, since mixing metals invites galvanic corrosion at the contact point. And some gutter guard types fit some profiles better than others, so if guards are part of the plan, it’s worth confirming compatibility before the gutter is ordered rather than after.

Absent a specific reason to go another way, .032 aluminum in a seamless installation is the safest general-purpose choice across most climates this site covers. It’s the default because the trade-offs are mild, not because it wins every category.

Go steel if snow load is genuinely severe. Go copper or zinc if the building warrants it and the budget is there. Go vinyl only if the climate is mild and the budget is the binding constraint, and go in expecting a shorter life.
