Aluminum, vinyl, and steel each solve the “keep water off the house” problem in a functionally similar way, but they differ enough in cost, weight, and climate tolerance that the right choice genuinely depends on where you live.

Aluminum: the default for good reason

Lightweight, resistant to rust, and moderately priced, aluminum handles most US climates well and is installed on the large majority of new homes for exactly those reasons. It dents more easily than steel (a stray branch or a carelessly placed ladder leaves a visible mark), but it won’t corrode through the way an unprotected steel gutter eventually can, which makes it more forgiving of imperfect maintenance over a long ownership period.

Vinyl: cheapest, with a real cold-weather tradeoff

Vinyl costs less upfront than any other common option and never needs painting, which makes it an easy sell purely on price. The tradeoff shows up specifically in cold climates: vinyl becomes noticeably brittle below freezing and can crack under the stress of snow or ice load in a way aluminum simply doesn’t experience at the same temperatures. In a mild climate with a tight budget, it’s a genuinely reasonable choice. In a climate with real winters, the upfront savings can turn into an earlier-than-expected replacement.

Steel: strength for snow-heavy climates

Steel handles heavy, sustained snow load better than aluminum, which is why it shows up more often in northern and mountain climates where winter weight is a real structural consideration rather than a minor inconvenience. The catch is entirely about the protective coating: scratch or chip it, and the exposed steel underneath will rust, sometimes faster than homeowners expect given how solid and durable the material feels to the touch.

Climate should drive the decision more than preference

Cold, snow-heavy climates favor steel’s strength over aluminum’s lighter weight, since the sustained ice and snow load is exactly the stress steel handles better. Mild, wet climates do perfectly well with aluminum’s corrosion resistance without needing steel’s extra strength, since snow load isn’t really a factor there. Tight budgets in genuinely mild climates can reasonably consider vinyl, as long as “mild” really means minimal freeze risk specifically, not just a moderate average temperature that still dips below freezing some winters.
