Ice dam prevention is mostly an attic project, not a gutter or roofing one. The earlier in fall you address heat loss, the less likely a ridge of ice ever forms at your eave line this winter.

Start in the attic, not the gutter

Ice dams form because heat escapes unevenly through the roof and melts snow in specific spots, so air sealing gaps around light fixtures, plumbing vents, and the attic access hatch reduces that heat loss more effectively than anything done at the gutter line itself.
